History

Texarkana, Texas (33┬░25'59"N, 94┬░1'14"W) is located at the junction of Interstate 30 and US highways 59, 67, 71, and 82 in extreme northeast Texas on the Texas-Arkansas border. It was named for its location on the state line between Bowie County, Texas and Miller County, Arkansas, just a short distance from the Louisiana border.

Population
In 1970 the area population was 101,198, with 67,813 in Bowie County, Texas, and 33,385 in Miller County, Arkansas. The population of Texarkana that year was 52,179, with 30,497 persons living on the Texas side and 21,682 residents on the Arkansas side. 

Families
From the 2000 census: There are 13,569 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 19.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.01.

Age
In the city the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.4 males.

Income
The median income for a household in the city is $29,727, and the median income for a family is $38,505. Males have a median income of $34,155 versus $21,143 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,815. 24.0% of the population and 19.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.8% are under the age of 18 and 13.2% are 65 or older.

Texarkana continues to grow, relying on the vast agricultural industry of the area as well as on a variety of manufacturing facilities.
